It being fixed in 2.6.38-8-generic won't kick it since I want all 4GB of
memory installed in my x201.

I'm having that issue - not every time though - on thinkpad t410 using
nvidia proprietary drivers.
I have the impression that shutting down compiz reduced the probability
of kernel panic from 100% to 50%. Haven't made more testing though.

On my X301 upon resume I get a still lit »moon« LED, a dark screen, but
the »HDD« LED is blinking in a frenzy. Nothing else, e.g. no blinking
»caps lock« LED to indicate a panic.
Am I seeing something else?
