I have the same problem. Minecraft's login screen and menu work fine,
game crashes when trying to load saves.

I'm also getting a crash on Oneiric Ocelot with OpenJDK 6 and 7. After
logging in, the game instantly closes and I get an error log in my Home
directory.

Idem, please note I have an ATI Radeon HD5770
The problem occurs in every java game using 3D, for instance the beta demo of
Blocks That Matter crashes too :

Also it does exactly the same with the sun-java6-jdk
(ppa:ferramroberto/java), that is why is think about a graphics driver
issue.
