It may. I will test it out. What command are you using to run it as
root?

It seems that running update-manager as root from the CLI does indeed
cause this issue. Please run update-manager from the Administration
area to proceed without any issues. If you must use the command line,
just run update-manager as yourself. Dont use sudo or su to start a
root shell.
I'm marking this bug as triaged since it appears to have enough
information for the developers to begin working on the problem. I'm also
giving this a low importance, by request of RedSingularity, since the
bug is easy to workaround.
Thanks again for helping to improve Ubuntu, and please report
Thanks for reporting this issue. Are you still able to reproduce this?

So far, yes, every time, in both Maverick and Natty. I'll need to wait
for something like another kernel update to test again.

Are you referring to the Restart Now button in the update-manager
window or the restart button on the gnome-panel?

The restart button that update-manager offers you does not work. The
restart menu option in gnome-panel works fine.

I tried it in both 10.10 and 11.04 with the expected results and no
problems. Seems to be a local issue. Run the following command and
post the output:
which update-manager

I'm using /usr/bin/update-manager. I usually run it as root from gnome-
terminal - could that be causing it?
