I do have the same problem:
powertop stalls the machine only when launched with sudo.
I have a lenovo thinkpad T410s (with nvidia graphics card) using ubuntu 11.4
and kernel 2.6.38-11-generic.
Version of powertop is 1.13.
Module thinkpad_acpi is loaded.

Argh. I spoke too soon. Powertop 1.11 monitors for 5 seconds, displays
the results, and then there is a segmentation fault. So, it gets
further, but it also crashes. At least it doesn't take the whole system
down with it. ;)

Problem exists for me as well on Powertop versions 1.12 and 1.13. It
does not exist for Powertop version 1.11.
I am running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 on a System76 Starling 4.
