The splash screen showed during boot (the one above the progress bar
that appears right after grub) seems to have an aspect ratio designed
for 4:3 monitors. I use a very ordinary 17" LCD monitor, with a 5:4
aspect ratio (1280x1024) and the splash screen looks slightly squeezed.
