There is a bug in G++ 4.1 when using -O2 that causes synfig to not
render images properly (composition is stuffed). The proper fix is to
recompile synfig with a newer G++ (I think it is fixed) or recompile
using -O1 and then rebuild synfigstudio with the fixed synfig.
pabs, synfig debian package
untar pixmaps.tgz
cd .../pixmaps
sudo cp *.png /usr/share/pixmaps

I see this too in edgy. Icons are installed, but many contain no
graphics, only a transparent canvas. Linking doesn't help and I don't
see why it should.
