I don't think this is usplash, I think it's one of the broken ACPI
causes shutdown/reboot to hang bugs.

Eduard: the weird fading issue is what happens when the screen goes
off, but the backlight stays on for some reason. It's pretty magical
when it happens and is usually some interaction between the video
drivers (X) and power-management blanking the screen.

I can conform this bug on two equal Tosiba's (Satalite A110-225).
Work around work's also.
I had also this problem when loging in a second time as a different
user. I didn't check (yet) if this also solved that problem.
I suspect it has something to do with the graphical interface. Maybe
