I have just upgraded my laptop to 12.04, still using the same soundcard.
Plugging in the audio jack now works as expected. Thank you to whoever
fixed the issue.

I am running kubuntu 11.04 on an ASUS K401J which also uses the VT1708S
Analog soundcard.
My problems are the same as the parent post.
When headphones are plugged in all sound is muted. Un-muting the sound
in kmix causes the un-muting of internal speakers as well as headphones.

Headphones work as they should using a 10.04 live CD,
alsa-util vers 1.0.22-0ubuntu5
alsa-base vers 1.0.22.1+dfsg-0ubuntu3,
Linux kernel vers 2.6.32-24 generic.

As a note, Headphones worked in Karmic(?) but stopped working after an
update. No luck since.
