mykrob, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

mykrob, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick
reached EOL on April 10, 2012.

On my Dell Latitude, same problem, ALPS trackpad is detected as PS/2
device:

I am experiencing the same issue on my ACER 7741Z-4433. Edge scrolling
and multitouch do not function.

Actually the problem has become worse for me in Natty, as
the trackpad which worked under in Maverick (at least scrolling did and
pasting using simultaneously clicking both mouse buttons),
while it doesn't anymore in Natty.

such in Natty:
