please either update grub package, or change the installer set the
Not_Compressed xattr to /boot as mentioned by @kylegates
the later is more likely to happen to precise at this late date

As an alternative, if you add the z (Not_Compressed) xattr to /boot its
contents won't get compressed and grub will continue to work.

I have a similar problem.
At the grub2 prompt, I can boot the system using the following commands
set root=(hd0,msdos1)
linux /@/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro rootflags=subvol=@
initrd /@/boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic

But I get a message saying that it cannot read the Lin
