the latest kernel update (mar. 19, 2011) produces the same problem.
i noticed that if it gets past the logon, the system would freeze.
re-installing grub seems to fix the problem again.

instead of bypassing the prompt, the system freezes and can only be
restarted by pressing the power off button on the computer.
