First of all, thanks for your concerns about this. Secondly, we have
gone several times over this and we decided that this was the best way
to handle errors, since any other option would imply resizing the
interface to fit the error messages.

All limitations of the GUI aside, I think this might be easily confused
with Gnome's standard caps-lock reminder - A simple Exclamation point
(though it is grey; the theme's selection color, possibly).
