correct. this is fixed, and the over all default impression greatly

I wrote the attached script to read Xsession desktoip files and invoke

Scott, am I right in understanding that the issue is completely fixed for you
by running Xsession?

I'm not sure what the right way to fix this generically is, but the reason I
was seeing this was that gconf settings were not getting populated with
defaults. That happened because I was simply running:
gnome-session --session=2d-ubuntu
That does *not* get gconf settings read. However, the f

I still see this issue with a freshly created user.
$ gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/show_maximized_titlebars
true
This is on a "fresh new user" (created by 'adduser' minutes ago).
The issue is "fixed" by setting
gconftool --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/show_maximized_titlebar
I had the same problem and it was fixed after updateing metacity.
It looks like installing unity-2d will not automatically update metacity
... not sure why. It has 2.30.2-0ubuntu1upicek4 as a dependency and now
I am running 2.30.2-0ubuntu1upicek6

I ran into the same issue with the not combined menu bar again.
You can reproduce it under Maverick doing the following steps:
1. Login in your Unity 2D session with working menu bar
2. Logout
3. Login again into Unity 2D Session. Now the menu bar will not combine anymore.
To resolve this proble
Thanks for the useful feedback.
@Scott: can you paste the output of:
$ gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/show_maximized_titlebars
$ dpkg -l metacity
Thanks!

I had the same issue when I started Unity-2D under Ubuntu 10.10 without
updating metacity via dist-upgrade.
To resolve this issue I installed metacity and removed Unity 's config
files in "/home/user/.gconf/desktop". After that I logged in again into
Unity-2D Desktop and the issue was fixed.

Thanks for the bug report Scott.
Can you attach the output of ps aux to the bug report?
Can you try with the latest version of Unity 2D available in the daily PPA:
