I tried to use my external monitor with the Unity desktop in a fresh
natty-upgrade on my Lenovo ThinkPad T410 (nVidia GT218 NVS 3100M, using
the proprietary driver) and things are completely broken:
* If I set the external monitor to be either left or right of the
internal screen and use a vertical screen resolution that is larger than
that of the internal monitor (1920x1080 vs. 1440x900), the launcher and
the menu-bar are placed at a vertical offset as displayed in the
attached screenshot. Strangely, the mouse-interaction with the launcher
seems to be "correct" (i.e. without the offset) such that it is
impossible to hit any of the buttons. If both screens have the same
vertical resolution, things are fine. The menu-bar, however, does not
react to the mouse in any way.
* If I set the external monitor to be "above" (irrespective of the
resolution), the launcher appears on the internal, lower, monitor if I
move the mouse to the top-left corner of the *external, upper* monitor.
* If the external monitor is set to be "below" (again, independent of
the resolution), neither the launcher or the menubar apper on the
screen.
