This crash does not happen anymore and I have experienced the black screen on
boot up, as described in bug 702090 in Ubuntu 10.10.
I think this issue can be considered solved.

Interesting; it appears from your dmesg that the nouveau drm driver is
loaded, but it's trying to use the -intel driver.
You have both Intel and NVIDIA graphics cards present, it appears there
is some confusion on the software's part as to which device to fire up.
Is this a hybrid graphics
Yes I have one of these laptops with switched graphics intel GM45 for
low power and nvidia G210 for higher performance (Asus UL30VT).
Unfortunately this functionality only works in Windows. I had no success
use nvidia previously so stayed with intel driver and the better power
profile.
