I can confirm this on (u,k,x) edgy.
running
$ sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start
returns nothing.
manual startup is functional but ugly. It would be nice to have daap
functionality out of the box for rhytmbox, amarok and banshee.

I can confirm this. Same behaviour for me.
sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start
does not print any messages either.
