Deleting /.kde/share/apps/akregator solved the crash problem, albeit at
the cost of losing data.

I have discovered that the problem is caused by a corrupted .mk4 file.
Isolating and removing the offending feed file using a cut and paste
approach with a file manager allowed me to solve the crash problem
without losing my data.
