I noticed that the xdg-mime workaround (see #8) worked on one computer
but not others, so it was probably just a lucky side effect from some
other workarounds I've tried.

It doesn't for me, i have a sftp bookmark to my company's ubuntu server
and when I click it from the dash it does nothing unless it is already
mounted, in that case it opens just fine.

Works this way if I click a bookmark from a Nautilus window. FTP
bookmarks inside "Places" open home directory.

I found a workaround for the FTP part of the problem, but someone should
confirm if it works for others too.
After running this command, FTP bookmarks open in Nautilus instead of
Firefox, both in Unity and Classic:
xdg-mime default nautilus.desktop x-scheme-handler/ftp

My gconf key "desktop / gnome / url-handlers / ftp" was set to Firefox,
but Unity opens FTP bookmarks in Chrome.

Even when not using Unity, this doesn't work properly anymore because
the "desktop / gnome / url-handlers / ftp" key doesn't exist anymore, so
Firefox is used by default to ipen ftp:// uris instead of Nautilus.

While at it, the icon for remote folders in Unity should be "folder-
remote" or "folder-remote-" (which in the humanity theme are
all represented by a folder with a network socket, and a cable in the
larger versions), not the generic "folder" icon which is currently being
displayed.
