Closing out pre-18.04 build failure bug reports.
This type of bug is often due to a kernel/vmware version discrepancy,
that was specific to the versions in play at the time. So, this
particular build failure is unlikely to be relevant to currently

Later observation: On one vm I had no problem with this open-vm-tools
rebuilding all previous kernel versions as well as the backported one.
On another, the dkms build failed on the previous latest-lucid kernel
and proceeded no further, and I had to manually enter the dkms commands
to build and ins
am trying to do the backport myself, but feel things are getting hairy
as this is for a production server, in this case one suffering from bug
#720095.
It was slightly worrying in that installing the backport kernel
triggered no apparent error message from the dkms_autoinstall script; I
