As reported by Lenbok on bug 754065, this was caused by having "Keep
previews of minimized windows" enabled in CompizConfig Settings Manager
-> Workarounds. Closing since the reporter no longer experiences the
problem and bug 754065 has much more information.

ive since done a fresh install (previously i upgraded maverick) and can
no longer re-produce this issue or provide any further information.
