I'm not an expert but I found a way to mend the problem of unity top panel
hidding the first lines of guake (maybe a little naively because it works only
for guake).
1. Open /usr/lib/guake/guake.py for edit in geany or gedit
2. Go to line 835
3. Increase the variable "window_rect.y" from 0 to
Are you experiencing a problem that Quake always displays to the right
of the Launcher? I am sorry but I don't have the top panel problem.

unity --reset doesn't work for me.

some old config which is breaking it - tried unity --reset?

I can confirm that this bug seems to be fixed after the upgrade to unity
3.8.4; the problem no longer occurs for me.

Still about one "enter" key out of view. I am using nvidia binary and
twinview though. I wonder if that is the difference? I have kept the
padding to 23 for now.

I had the line also, but dialed the number back a couple and found the
sweet spot so I could see the terminal and not the white bar.

that does help, though i had to add the line and then edit, only
downside is it adds a horrible white border on the top and bottom of
guake. i really hope this bug is fixed soon.

Here is a temp work around for anyone that this is annoying--this should not be
used as a permanent fix.
goto /usr/share/guake/guake.glade
Look for this line:
