This doesn't occur in Gutsy. The reason I downloaded Gutsy in the first
place was that I was under the impression that it had been solved in the
newer gnome-power-manager package in Gutsy's repositories (there's a comment
in this bug or a duplicate to that effect).

It also occurs on my Dell XPS M1210. Adding blacklist video to
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist fixes the issue, and the brightness control
works as expected (it's handled in hardware, not software, as evidence
by the keys working in GRUB or while Ubuntu is starting).

I can confirm this on my Dell Inspiron 1501
After blacklisting video (add blacklist video to
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) it doesn't crash anymore but the brightness-
keys do nothing
