Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Updated ubuntu using update-manager, including the new kernel, 2.6.38-8
and upon restarting, gdm was not displaying user names, therefore login
was not possible.

What I tried is I entered a virtual terminal and typed command "sudo
apt-get purge gdm" and reinstalled ubuntu-desktop afterwards which
allowed me to log in but Ubuntu is glitchy.

This is Ubuntu 11.04.
