It works with the software output (both with mplayer -vo x11 and after
switching the gstreamer driver to the non-xv output). I'm using the i810
driver for this card (new ThinkPad X60s):

looks like some videodriver or xv issue, what videocard and videodriver
are you using? Does it happen with mplayer -vo x11?

There won't be a backtrace: totem prints this on stderr:
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
