Same thing happens here. Audio in Pithos, VLC, and VirtualBox VMs is
affected, but audio through the browser seemed to be OK.
To others with the same issue, you can restart compiz manually to fix
the problem. Press Alt+F2 to bring up the run command dialog, then
enter:
compiz --replace

I will be listening to music doing whatever and then the audio will go
to crap as said in the title.
I thought this was system wide but audio from youtube seems to be ok,
while in vlc it's still bad, then this happened:
