Would be great if you could change to your desired desktop too. That was
possible with some docks, as far as I can remember.
Maybe left click to do the expo and right/middle click to go to
specific desktop?

I merely came to complain about the generic desktop switcher icon; the
icon should be more reflective of what it does. As for whether or not it
should indicate which desktop is current, that kind of opens up a can of
worms in so far as different people will have different desktop set ups;
one row,
I agree with the OP, I myself wanted t report about this missing
feature.
The main point is that with the current behavior of unity you do not
know where you are, and you have to try changing workspace or do the
expo to understand it.
