I have finally figured out what was causing the problem.
I had used KMyFirewall to set up iptables, and it seems that either the
default behaviour is to apply rules to loopback in addition to the
physical network interfaces, or I screwed up the configuration when I
first installed it :).

Yes, hpiod is no more beginning with HPLIP 2.7.6. The affected users
could try that as an alternative.

Don, Raghu, anything which can be done here?
In the newest version of HPLIP the problem is most probably obsolete as
there is no HPIOD any more. Is this correct?

Try:
sudo lsof | grep hpiod
Check your output and search for a row similar like this:
hpiod 6570root0u IPv4 25065 TCP
localhost:2208 (LISTEN)
It is important, that hplip binds to localhost:2208 and not to e.g.
gmckeown:2208.
Please check this.

Having the same problem here on Kubuntu Feisty. The hplip daemon seems
to start OK. A side effect is that when trying to add a printer via
KDE's System Settings, the program hangs for a couple of minutes before
allowing me to add a printer.
* Netstat reports:
tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:2208
Btw, ignore the difference in hostnames in the log excerpts -- that was
a half-hearted attempt to shorten the line-lengths... D'oh.

sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
then in another terminal shell run:
sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart
post the /var/log/messages
Try running hp-toolbox if the /var/log/messages doesn't report any
errors.
