Suffering from the same problem with XUbuntu and my L400. My solution
was to remove the ACPI script responsible for actually putting the
computer in sleep mode. That way, I can still have ACPI support enabled.
I also commented the relevant line (sleep) in /etc/default/acpi-support
so the system
I did a different thing and followed another part of Gavin's advice. I
installed Ubuntu by adding acpi=off to the options at the install menu.

Hi All,
Same problem on my Dell L400 with fresh Xubuntu 8.04 install.
The Laptop used to go into sleep mode while loading X.
I followed the advices and put Sleep modes to false in /etc/default/acpi-support
Now xunbuntu load perfectly to login screen.
Problem is that the laptop go into sleep

I've not booted the Mythbuntu Live CD does it not have a graphical boot
menu where you select what you want to do?

I can confirm that this still happens in later versions. I tried
installing Mythbuntu 8.04 RC1 yesterday on my Latitude L400 and got the
same problem. As you probably know, this is based on the latest Ubuntu
8.04. Furthermore, installing Suse linux 10.3 also displays the same
problem.

I have had acpi=off in grub/menu.lst for the past number of months.
Last week I upgraded to gutsy and so am now running 2.6.22-10-generic.
This evening, following upgrade to latest, I tried
booting back into the old 2.6.20 kernel from feisty (with acpi enabled)
causes the acpi_listen messages to recur. So, it appears the 2.6.22
kernel fixed the issue.

problem!
Bug not fixed, but at least we'll know what to fix.
6.10 still has other issues though... I'm eager to use Feisty Fawn.

sorry for late reply, anyway my solution was set
ACPI_SLEEP=false
in /etc/default/acpi-support
that will prevent any functionality of sleep in your laptop
for make it boot one time and fix the acpi-support file, just stop GRUB
at start and add noacpi acpi=off at the kernel parameters
anyway
think i can exclude the video driver trouble, since disabling kdm (in my
case that use kubuntu) doesn't change anything
still get the laptop suspended asap the bootsequence ends, just
disabling ACPI or disabling the sleep function solves (partially) the
problem

Indeed, reconfiguring Xorg did'nt changed anything. But how do I manage
to disable ACPI or the sleep function?

this is most likely an ATI driver problem. You could try see if it works
if you change driver to from ati vesa in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart
GDM on the liveCD.
