I can't test classic-compiz mode because compiz repeatedly segfaults,
but it works fine in classic-no-effects mode.
I didn't describe it properly in the summary: what I meant to say is the
skype indicator should show the number of events needing attention (see

The issue you're describing doesn't sound related to Unity. Could you
log into a classic gnome session and see if this issue persists?
