I have the same problem here with Ubuntu 14.10. I adopted Wicd because
network-manager keeps using 100% cpu.

reyammer, that's right. And I used your fix, and I can confirm, that
wicd works flawlessly in the indicator area, starts up automatically
after logging in, and connects to networks, and for me all is fixed.
I think it should whitelist itself automatically after installation.

Rob, I see your point, and I agree with you.
The install process should add wicd to the whitelist, silently or by
asking the permission to the user.

I disagree, I think this *is* a wicd issue.
Shouldn't the install process put wicd in the unity systray panel
whitelist by default?

Title:
wicd
This is not a wicd issue.
In order to show the wicd indicator, you should first put wicd in the unity
systray panel whitelist.
Check how to do this at https://bugs.launchpad.net/wicd/+bug/761326/comments/2.
Let me know if you have problems with those steps.
I'm setting this bug as invalid, since
This is due to #761326, wicd doesn't support the the application
indicators. The workaround is to use
wicd-client -n
and a gtk window will pop up. Everything works then.
