Upgrade from 10.10 to Natty results in system freeze

I can confirm this. My system (Thinkpad T61) froze while updating. After
a reboot I finished the upgrade and I'm now having various issues:
1) System freezes during boot
2) X is not starting, have to stop/start gdm to make it work
3) System is freezing without apparent reason

I just looked at the patch failure . Its a confusing error as exactly
the same file is patched (same md5sum) in the auto-upgrade-tester and so
far it was not a issue.

I just completed another upgrade test. No issues this time.
Minor variation in test method to save a bit of time:
a) fresh 10.10 install
b) all available 10.10 updates
c) ran cdromupgrade using the current daily alternate ISO, also checking
online for latest packages (to save time)

I had previously run a couple of upgrade tests on April 6 to test some lupin
changes (bug 610898) - and I didn't have any problems then.
There were some minor differences in the way I did the upgrade for those
tests:
(a) I did the upgrade from a fresh 10.10 install, and
