I have printed both PostScript files on a native PostScript printer (HP LaserJet 3390 AIO) now and both come out black, but not totally black. One sees the structure of bad.png somewhat. So the PostScript produced by libgnomeprint still contains the information of the image but prints way too

Can you do the following tests: Try to print (convert to PostScript) the image from other programs (GIMP, f-spot, gqview, ...) or directly to CUPS (lpr -o scaling=100 file.png). Does the same problem occur? Install GPL GhostScript (sudo apt-get install gs-gpl, perhaps you will need to activate
