I can confirm this is still a problem with Unity 3.8.10-0ubuntu2. I
have attached a video to show the problem. If I just press enter after
typing part of the name there is a noticeable pause.

I can't reproduce this. Are you running the latest version of Unity
(3.8.10-0ubuntu2) ?
