I can confirm this on my Edgy machine. It's likely to be an issue with
libxml-ruby rather than on ruby itself...

Oh, yeah. Sorry about that. :) Here's what happens when I run it:
# ./test.rb
./test.rb:6: [BUG] Segmentation fault
ruby 1.8.4 (2005-12-24) [i486-linux]
Aborted
When I use gdb, alas I have no debug symbols, but here's what "where" gets me:
(gdb) run ./test.rb
Starting program: /usr/bin/ruby
