I'm happy to see that TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGES is included :)
As I promised I did some test.
I installed a Natty guest onto the Natty host. The Natty guest was installed
with the boot option to install a minimal virtual system, and in the tasksel
session I chose Basic Ubunt server and Op

yes, I can confirm that I got the same problem without hugetlbfs.
Anyway, is there any reason why Ubuntu kernel team didn't set
Transparent huge pages to yes in the kernel configuration?
I did and dtill doing some test, I will post the results.

Are you able to test with a natty guest? If the bug is due to a (fixed
upstream) virtio net bug, this would help us test that.
Do you get the same problem if you run without hugetlbfs?
