This is vmware workstation, but I just tried vmware player on the same
system, and it also crashed while trying to start a VM (the VM started,
but vmware player crashed.)
This latest test is with 0.1.12:

On the forums in response to my suggestion to downgrade the lib,
Heroprotago suggests using the LD_PRELOAD environment variable to force
vmware to use the glib it is shipped with.
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/vmware/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0/libglib-2.0.so.0
He suggests putting this in the vmware shell
