What is 'plymouth-manager'? Where did you get this ubuntu-sunrise
theme, which is not part of the Ubuntu plymouth package?
I suspect this to be a bug in the theme overriding the default
resolution, rather than a bug in plymouth.

Just in case somebody reads this:
Simply re-install all plymouth packages, setting the ubuntu default
theme as the active, and run:
sudo update-initramfs -u
solves the problem (or at least is a workaround).
