I experience this bug in precise, but not only with vlc but also with totem or mplayer, so it is obviously not a vlc bug. It is present in unity and gnome classic, but only under compiz. So using gnome-panel with metacity is a workaround (alt+F2 metacity --replace) -- You received this bug
