Unfortunately, since this was the livecd, after the kernel panic
appeared on the screen the machine was totally unresponsive. I've been
trying to get the livecd to boot again on this machine, so far without
success. I suspect that this kernel panic is due to a race and I'm
mostly hitting it

That's a good idea; it will take me a while because I'll have to clear
some things off a suitable usb stick and get more time to play around
with Natty. Do you know if you get a kernel dump when starting from a
usb stick?
