I did not enable the multiverse repositories (and didn't know about them
(and if I had known about them, I might not have known that mp3 support
needs them)).
I think it might be nice if the user initially would be alerted about
the issue somehow, and if the subsequent silent fails on playing mp3'
Agreed. Did you remember to enable the multiverse repositories?
(This can be done by ticking the "Software restricted by copyright or legal
issues" box in the "Software sources" dialog. [This dialog can in turn be found
by starting the software centre, and hitting Edit->Software sources.])

as far as I can remember this behaviour it's intentional because there
are some issues with copyrights in some countries so I really don't
think it's a banshee fault
