The right package, laptop-mode-tools, is in fact in main (and needs to
be merged from Debian BTW). I guess the laptop-mode in universe is
obsolete.

I merged the new upstream version and requested an upload in bug
#119519. The patch is still needed though. I will make a debdiff for
Peter's patch as soon as the merge has gone through.

laptop_mode status DOES NOT check
Thank you for your work on this bug. I am adding the patch tag to draw
the attention of packagers. I have unsubscribed ubuntu-universe-
sponsors as this does not represent a new revision (patch is not a
debdiff). If a debdiff is prepared to address this issue, please
resubscribe
The attached patch includes all previous corrections (see rest of this
bug) and corrects a problem with unquoted arguments causing an == check
to fail (refer to #84802) that was introduced in or about Herd3.
** Attachment added: Patch Herd3 laptop_mode with read checks, better error
messages, no
I've attached a new diff file that
a) corrects a problem with the first diff (bogus error messages when run
as root),
b) has better error messages for the block dev check (do NOT suggest
changing perms, that would be a security problem), and
c) corrects the hdparm silent failure problem.
The hdparm command will also silently fail.
