Well I've cracked it using the 'agressive' method given in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver
to fully remove fglrx and re-install the radeon driver. Now I get 3D
unity :)
I don't know where my system got screwed up. I had to do a full
reinstall for Lucid

Segmentation fault
I don't know if it is relevant, but I also get a Segmentation fault when
