I have the exact same problem- have tried installing several different
sound mixers that will detect the headphones but nothing is working. I
am using an ASUS laptop running Ubuntu 11.4 with the same sound card
mentioned above... no luck so far

Same problem here. I don't know if this information helps, but switching
Independent HP off in alsamixer mutes the headphones and keeps the
speakers on.
