However, I use Mint 11.04.

If you use NVIDIA drivers you can easily add under xorg.conf the
following setting:
Section Device
Identifier Device0
Driver nvidia
VendorName NVIDIA Corporation
Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1
EndSection
this does not block certification, but thanks for reporting it
