also noting if i tell the login manager to automatically log in as me,
it does not happen. so somehow this is related to the gdm login login
screen.

There seems to be a way to workaround the issue stated un the page

no crash log is generated with that apport thing.
i notice when i login via gdm and it crashes, the network never shows up
in the system tray.
when i console login and startx, the network icon does show in the
system tray.
culprit?

i can confirm this problem in the latest vmware fusion. livecd is fine,
login looks great, seconds later the theme crashes and im on ugly
square.
this does not happen if i kill gdm and startx as my user. only happens
if i log in via gdm. (which always seems plauged, eh?)

I tried to use apport, but it didn't produce any ".crash" file. It is
however quite reproducible, both with Unity 2d and Ubuntu Classic.

Theming service crash and reverting to GTK cl
Although the installation is not vanilla after Unity-2D install, it
happens even on a fresh Natty vanilla install.
Steps to Reproduce:
Make use of VMware Fusion on a Mac system (if specific OSX 10.6.7 macbook
unibody 5,1).
Virtual Machine sattings are detailed in the attached VMX file.
Install
I haven't tested another flavor of vmware as Host or another
virtualization solution.
