After some time with it, I think this is actually a bug in the radeon
device driver. I recently bought an Nvidia card and have not had any
problems. Will reopen if I do.

I do not know if this is the same bug but I just had a system freeze
with a repeated sound loop on my brand new Toshiba L675-7107. The system
was not under heavy load.

I was messing around trying to reproduce the freeze that I've
experienced a few times. Finally, under heavy load, with music playing,
the system froze when I opened a new Chromium window. A short clip of
music that was playing at the time then started cycling over and over,
and I could no longer
