This is related to bug 772834 and has the same symptoms on a different
hardware setup.
When trying to enter into suspend mode the screen goes black, with the
LED backlight still on, and the fan spins up at which point the system
appears to hang. I am unable to switch to either a terminal prompt or
back to Unity (Ctrl+Alt+F7).
I have tried adding the pcie_aspm=off command to the grub boot args and
also removing the xhci_hcd driver before going into suspend. Neither
have helped, although there is a slight difference in behaviour. Without
removing the xhci_hcd driver the HDD light remains lit, buy removing it
first and going into suspend the HDD light eventually goes off.
I will post more information from apport.
