Unfortunately I've moved on in terms of the messaging software I use. I
am using Pidgin now and I have also stopped using jabber since the
server I was registered with was taken down. This means that I am not
really in a good position to test this anymore.

It is starting to look like this problem is not limited to gateways. For
instance I have just configured gajim to connect to gmail.com server and
now I get new mail notifications from there too.
The simplest fix might be to be able to set gajim to automatically
discard messages containing certain
about the new mail notification for google accounts, there is an option
in version 0.11 (maybe version 0.10 but I cannot confirm) in the
advanced panel in preferences.
