This is in fact a bug and its a duplicate of bug 346386 which is fixed
in an updated version of apt in Natty.

This does seem to be a bug. Some update related files in
/var/lib/apt/lists were clobbered with html from ISP's walled garden.

It's a bug, happens all the time. The wireless proxy reverts to log in
mode after about 10 minutes of activity. Update downloads stuff, but it
is just getting the login proxy sign-on screen. I have a workaround
with a perl script that repairs the damage.
