The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

I have a problem that might possibly be related. My HDA family device (I
presume it is so, as it uses the snd_hda_codec and snd_hda_intel
modules,) does not display a "master" mixer either. In my case, it makes
the internal speakers borderline unusable, as the default volume for
them is far too low

same here using feisty 28 feb, except that both 'surround' and 'PCM'
control sound output---disabling either results in no sound.

Several updates just went into upstream from alsa, a few related to hda
sound.
It may be a week, but when 2.6.20-6.7 is uploaded. could you test it
please?
